Short Film Spotlight: Historia de un oso (Bear Story)

Synopsis: An old bear goes out every day to the same corner to put on a street show with a small theater that he has built himself and filled with tin puppets. Passers-by can see the story of a circus bear who was separated from his family and his journey to return home.

Bear Story is inspired by the life of Leopoldo Osorio, director Gabriel Osorio’s grandfather, a political exile during Chile’s military dictatorship.

In won Best Animated Short Film at the 88th Academy Awards, making it the first Latin American-produced animated short film to be nominated for and win an Oscar.

Synopsis: When a curious child falls into a long-forgotten cave, she is confronted by a mysterious spirit and must decide whether the being is kindhearted or something more perilous.

Written and directed by Tompswell.

Director’s note: I was driven to create this film because of two reasons. Firstly, I grew up with classic Disney and Studio Ghibli animations and have been a huge fan ever since.

The second reason is that I needed to process the difficult emotions dealing with the loss of a loved one.

The question “what happens after we die?” is a scary one, and it may be comforting to imagine that we won’t have to face it alone.
