Wolverine and Iron Man get their own TV series

Nicktoons Network has joined forces with Marvel Entertainment to bring Wolverine and Iron Man from the comic book page to television in two brand-new animated series, debuting exclusively on Nicktoons Network in first quarter 2009.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN:
The story begins as an explosive event shatters the lives of the X-Men and takes away their mentor, Professor X. The beaten heroes, including Beast, Storm, Cyclops and Nightcrawler, walk away from it all but then they are given a rare glimpse into the future, where they see a world in utter ruin ruled by giant destructive robots. They discover the world has spiraled out of control because the X-Men have given up. So now the most legendary of all X-Men, Wolverine, must take the lead on the ultimate mission — to prevent the world’s destruction — while fending off enemies Magneto and The Brotherhood.

IRON MAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES:
Tony Stark, heir to a billion-dollar corporation, lives a life of luxury, free to pursue his chief interests — seeking extreme thrills, solving scientific mysteries and creating mind-boggling inventions. But everything goes horribly wrong when a tragic accident robs Tony of his father and nearly costs him his own life. Now dependent on his own impressive technology for survival and dedicated to battling corruption, Tony must reconcile the pressure of teenage life with the duties of a Super Hero. Inside his remarkable invention, Tony Stark is geared for high-speed flight, high-tech battles and high-octane adventure. He is Iron Man.

Pixar’s John Carter of Mars moving ahead

The trilogy of live-action (yes, actual people!) John Carter of Mars movies by Pixar seem to be moving ahead. In fact, Disney has already registered the following domains, which reveal the titles of the movies:

* JOHNCARTEROFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* JOHNCARTEROFMARS-THEMOVIE.COM
* JOHNCARTEROFMARSTHEMOVIE.COM
* JOHNCARTERANDTHEGODSOFMARS.COM
* JOHNCARTERANDTHEWARLORDOFMARS.COM
* GODSOFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* GODSOFMARSMOVIE.COM
* THEGODSOFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* THEGODSOFMARSMOVIE.COM
* THEWARLORDOFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* THEWARLORDOFMARSMOVIE.COM
* WARLORDOFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* CHILDRENOFMARS.COM

It’s also interesting to note that the development of the trilogy might be put on the fast track if Disney’s Narnia series performs poorly at the box office. Rumors around Hollywood suggest that Disney might pull the plug after the third movie if the series doesn’t pull in some serious cash. If they do pull the plug it would leave a big opening in Disney’s schedule that would be filled by Pixar’s John Carter of Mars – which was originally scheduled for 2012. We’ll keep you posted on any further developments.

Radiohead launches animation contest

Aniboom and TBD Records have launched a contest inviting all creators and Radiohead fans from across the globe to produce an animated music video for any one of the songs from the band’s latest album, In Rainbows. The contest, to be separated into four stages, will culminate with the selection by the members of Radiohead of a winner who will be awarded a $10,000 prize to produce a full-length animated music video.

The first stage of the competition begins today and continues through April 27, inviting all artists, animators, writers, character designers and more, to submit storyboards that may range from basic sketches with words to more complex submissions in video formats, using the song of their choice from In Rainbows. Artists have the option to compete solo or to ask Aniboom to match them with other entrants whose talents complement their own. More information on the contest can be found at aniboom.com/radiohead.

The storyboards will be posted for viewing and ranking by creators and fans, after which a panel that will include people from Aniboom, TBD Records and Adult Swim will select ten semifinalists who will be awarded $1,000 each to produce a one-minute animated music video. The semifinalist videos will be shared across Aniboom’s web-wide network of distribution partners, and fans will be given the opportunity to vote at aniboom.com and at MySpace. The videos will then be submitted to Radiohead to select the winner. The creator(s) of the winning video will be awarded $10,000 to expand their one minute submission to produce the full-length video. In addition, the winning video may have its broadcast premiere on Adult Swim.

Over 400 posts and one year later…

Who would have thought that a small idea I had while browsing the net would grow into what it is today. I started The Animation Blog a little over a year ago while sitting at my desk, watching classic cartoons on Youtube. Having founded many sites before, I said to myself… “I should start an animation blog” and 15 minutes later TheAnimationBlog.com was registered and the rest, as they say, is history.

Now one year later and over 400 posts (not bad for one person on staff…) I sit here, in the same location where it all began. I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for making The Animation Blog what it is today. Popularity increases on a monthly basis and for that, I sincerely thank you.

Please continue to visit and I’ll continue to write. Subscribe to the RSS feed and spread the word to your friends!

Once again, thank you!

Sincerely,
The Animation Blog Founder

Brad Bird to direct live-action 1906 with Warner Bros and Pixar

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Brad Bird, director of The Incredibles and Ratatouille, has signed on to make his live-action feature directorial debut with “1906,” a co-production between Warner Bros. and Disney/Pixar. Since the film will be live-action, I think its safe to assume that Pixar will be in charge of all the special effects in the movie. And considering that the movie is set during the great 1906 Earthquake in San Francisco, I think there will be a large amount of special effects shots.

The story centers on a college student who begins to investigate the murder of his father, uncovering a web of deceit that has left the city vulnerable to the sort of fire that breaks out when the Great Earthquake of 1906 hits San Francisco.
