‘Monsters, Inc. 2’ confirmed, release date announced

The long-rumored sequel is now official. Monsters, Inc. will arrive in theaters November 16, 2012. Disney/Pixar also announced that Brave (previously known as The Bear and the Bow) will be released on June 15, 2012.

So there you have it folks — Pixar’s lineup through 2012. This June we get Toy Story 3. Next summer we get Cars 2. And in 2012, for the first time ever, we’ll get two Pixar films in one year.

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland coming to DVD, Blu-ray June 1

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney’s 4th biggest film of all time, is heading to DVD and Blu-ray June 1, 2010. A 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy), 1-Disc Blu-ray and 1-Disc DVD will be released by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

The Blu-ray Disc versions of the film include nine bonus features that take viewers deeper into the Rabbit Hole – exploring more of the world of Wonderland, its iconic characters and the making of the film. Features include the making of the Futterwacken Dance, a look inside the world of the Mad Hatter and Johnny Depp’s transformation, Tim Burton’s vision for the movie and its characters, the visual effects of growing and shrinking of Alice, costume designs, music, stunts and more.

The film’s opening weekend made Alice in Wonderland the highest-grossing non-sequel opening weekend in history, the biggest March opening of all time, the biggest 3D opening of all time and the biggest IMAX opening of all time. As of today, according to Box Office Mojo, its worldwide gross is $784,748,859.

Short film spotlight: Destino

Destino is a short animated cartoon released in 2003 by The Walt Disney Company. Destino is unique in that its production originally began in 1945, 58 years before its eventual completion. The project was a collaboration between Walt Disney and Spanish painter Salvador Dalí, and features music written by Mexican songwriter Armando Dominguez. More details available on Wikipedia.

Henry Selick returns to Disney

Henry Selick, director of “Coraline,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “James and the Giant Peach,” will be making his way back to Disney, setting up shop at Pixar’s studio in Emeryville, CA.

Selick plans to write and direct original features along with adapting books. While he may be set up at Pixar, his films will continue to be produced as stop-motion animation.

No word on whether or not the films will be released under the Disney or Pixar name.

Pixar’s ‘Day & Night’ revealed

Pixar has revealed details for “Day & Night,” the short film that will play before Toy Story 3 beginning June 18. The short film is directed by Teddy Newton, who’s credits include Character Designer (The Incredibles, Presto), and Storyboard Artist (The Iron Giant). This will mark Newton’s Pixar directorial debut.

The official synopsis:

When Day, a sunny fellow, encounters Night, a stranger of distinctly darker moods, sparks fly! Day and Night are frightened and suspicious of each other at first, and quickly get off on the wrong foot. But as they discover each other’s unique qualities–and come to realize that each of them offers a different window onto the same world–the friendship helps both to gain a new perspective.
