DreamWorks Animation today revealed the voice cast for their upcoming animated film, Monsters vs. Aliens. The movie will star Reese Witherspoon as Susan Murphy, a California girl who, on her wedding day, has the bad luck to be hit by a meteor, which causes her to grow to be 49 feet, 11½ inches tall. Captured by the military, she’s renamed Ginormica. Other cast members will include: Rainn Wilson, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland and… wait for it… Stephen Colbert playing the role of the President!
Monsters vs. Aliens will be released on March 27th 2009.
ComingSoon has learned today at the ShoWest exhibitors convention in Las Vegas that studios are really excited about 3D — so much that they are planning to release many of their upcoming animated films in 3D.
20th Century Fox’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Disney’s Bolt and Pixar’s Up will all be all be released in 3D. As if that wasn’t enough 3D to make you dizzy, Disney will release 3 more, unannounced, movies in 3D. Not to be outdone by the other kids on the playground, DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming movies will all be in 3D as well.
According to Trademork, on March 3, 2008, Dreamworks Animation filed a trademark for Madagascar Escape 2 Africa in relation to “animated motion picture films for theatrical release and for distribution via television”. They also registered MadagascarEscape2Africa.com, a second hint that leads us to believe the new name will in fact be Escape 2 Africa. In case you don’t remember, the previous title was Madagascar: The Crate Escape.
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa opens in theaters on November 7.
Variety reports that Jill Culton, who directed Sony Pictures Animation’s first film Open Season, has signed on to direct Hotel Transylvania, which will follow the upcoming Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
Michelle Murdocca is producing and Amy Jupiter is co-producing. No writers have been hired.
The story follows Simon Van Helsing, the youngest in a long line of monster hunters, who falls in love with Dracula’s daughter Mavis. They discover they are meant to be natural enemies, but try to forge peace between the monsters and humans.
Check out this 10 minute preview for the upcoming Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who, animated by the same folks who brought us Ice Age.
I’m excited to see how the finished movie turned out. I won’t have to wait much longer and neither will you because Horton Hears a Who will be in theaters on March 14, 2008.

Producer Maryann Garger and director David Bowers announced today that Freddie Highmore has signed on to voice ASTRO BOY in the upcoming CG-animated movie.
Set in futuristic Metro City, ASTRO BOY is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist to replace the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving father’s expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the man who had rejected him.
Highmore’s previous films include The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Golden Compass, August Rush and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
DreamWorks Animation has announced that they will now release “How to Train Your Dragon” on March 26, 2010 instead of the previously announced release date of November 20, 2009. Its new release date comes with less competition as November’s date would have put the movie up against Jim Carrey’s A Christmas Carol and James Cameron’s AVATAR, both of which are also presented in 3D.
“The combination of a jam-up domestically and the very limited 3-D capacity internationally just didn’t make sense,” CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told The Hollywood Reporter. “There will not be anywhere near the number of screens needed…” Katzenberg said he expects the number of 3D capable screens to increase from 1,000 to 5,000 by the time the movie hits theaters.

Pixar’s Andrew Stanton, director of WALL-E, was present at this year’s WonderCon to speak about and show new WALL-E clips to the people in attendance.
So here are some of the highlights, provided by ComingSoon:
WALL-E stands for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class.
Earth is buried in trash from over consumption and embarks on a 5 year space cruise to wait out the clean up efforts. Something goes wrong and they are gone for 700 years. The clean up effort fails as all the machines left, fall apart. WALL-E is the last one left.
EVE is a probe droid that is sent down to check out the planet, and WALL-E falls in love with her. Everything revolves around his pursuit of her.
Ben Burt (Star Wars) is doing the sound design.
Mr. Stanton also showed several clips from the movie:
Day in the Life of WALL-E.
WALL-E showing EVE his “home”.
“Helo, Dolly!” music scene.
WALL-E stowing away on pod recovery ship.
WALL-E being sent back to earth from the home ship AXIOM.

Do you hear that? That’s the sound of millions of fans around the world screaming at their monitors. You really can’t blame them though. Akira is a beloved manga and animated film and a live-action adaptation may or may not live up to the original. The story is set in a post-nuclear war “New Tokyo” in 2019 where a teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his powers. The gang’s leader must find a way to stop the ensuing destruction.
Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio is producing the film with the possibility of starring. Ruairi Robinson has been hired to direct and would mark the feature directorial debut for Robinson who was nominated for a best animated short Oscar in 2001 for a sci-fi comedy called “Fifty Percent Grey.” He also wrote and directed a sci-fi short titled “The Silent City.” Warner Bros. is hoping for a summer 2009 release for the first movie.
Straight from Peter Gabriel himself comes the news that he is involved with Pixar’s upcoming summer movie, WALL-E. It is unclear exactly what he will be contributing but he says he’ll be creating one or two new things as well as putting some glue on things he’s done in the past. Perhaps some of his music will be remixed for the the movie.
Peter has been involved with the movie for quite some time, when he was approached by Pixar back in 2005. He has high hopes that WALL-E will continue the Pixar tradition of being appropriate for children but at the same time enjoyable for adults.

The fine folks over at Empire Online were lucky enough to tour Pixar headquarters. Luckily for all of us, they took a video camera along to document the guided tour.
So Pixar, where’s my invitation? It’s in the mail right? Right?
