Behind-the-scenes of Horton Hears a Who

The fine folks over at the wonderful CGSociety have a great in-depth, behind-the-scenes feature of the hit animated movie, Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who, by Blue Sky Studios.

Here’s a small excerpt:

Another explanation was the need to master “squash-and-stretch” techniques that transcended the boundaries of animation physics and character performance and believability in order to capture the wonder and imagination of a Dr. Seuss story. The aim was to produce extreme looks and movements, including an effect to make their legs move so quickly that they smear on screen.

Head over to CGSociety to read the entire two page feature.

Persopolis returns to theaters

Persepolis, the Oscar-nominated animated feature, will return to 100 theaters in an English-language version on April 11. Co-written and co-directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, it’s based on Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel.

The English version of Persepolis features the voices of Chiara Mastroianni and her mother, Catherine Deneuve, as Marjane and Marjane’s mother. Sean Penn provides the voice of Marjane’s father; Gena Rowlands plays Marjane’s grandmother; Iggy Pop is Uncle Anouche; and Amethyste Frezignac plays young Marjane.

Pixar’s John Carter of Mars moving ahead

The trilogy of live-action (yes, actual people!) John Carter of Mars movies by Pixar seem to be moving ahead. In fact, Disney has already registered the following domains, which reveal the titles of the movies:

* JOHNCARTEROFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* JOHNCARTEROFMARS-THEMOVIE.COM
* JOHNCARTEROFMARSTHEMOVIE.COM
* JOHNCARTERANDTHEGODSOFMARS.COM
* JOHNCARTERANDTHEWARLORDOFMARS.COM
* GODSOFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* GODSOFMARSMOVIE.COM
* THEGODSOFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* THEGODSOFMARSMOVIE.COM
* THEWARLORDOFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* THEWARLORDOFMARSMOVIE.COM
* WARLORDOFMARS-MOVIE.COM
* CHILDRENOFMARS.COM

It’s also interesting to note that the development of the trilogy might be put on the fast track if Disney’s Narnia series performs poorly at the box office. Rumors around Hollywood suggest that Disney might pull the plug after the third movie if the series doesn’t pull in some serious cash. If they do pull the plug it would leave a big opening in Disney’s schedule that would be filled by Pixar’s John Carter of Mars – which was originally scheduled for 2012. We’ll keep you posted on any further developments.

Horton Hears a Who debuts at #1

20th Century Fox’s animated “Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!” took the number one spot this weekend, bringing in $45.1 million, the best opening of 2008 so far.

Featuring the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell, “Horton Hears a Who” is the latest film from Blue Sky Studios, the same studio that brought us Ice Age, Robots and Ice Age 2. They are currently hard at work on Ice Age 3, scheduled for release mid-2009.

With this #1 debut, Blue Sky Studios now now has four of the top six March debuts of all time.

Congratulations to everyone at Blue Sky Studios. It’s always nice to see an animated movie debut at #1.

Brad Bird to direct live-action 1906 with Warner Bros and Pixar

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Brad Bird, director of The Incredibles and Ratatouille, has signed on to make his live-action feature directorial debut with “1906,” a co-production between Warner Bros. and Disney/Pixar. Since the film will be live-action, I think its safe to assume that Pixar will be in charge of all the special effects in the movie. And considering that the movie is set during the great 1906 Earthquake in San Francisco, I think there will be a large amount of special effects shots.

The story centers on a college student who begins to investigate the murder of his father, uncovering a web of deceit that has left the city vulnerable to the sort of fire that breaks out when the Great Earthquake of 1906 hits San Francisco.
